Prescription of a prosthetic is a multidisciplinary process that includes at least the user, prosthetist, and physiotherapist. During the prescription process, the team decides on the type of device that should be fabricated, the socket design, the various types of components, and the choice of suspension. In Lower-limb amputees, comfort and mobility are the two most important characteristics of a prosthesis.
A detailed assessment of the residual muscle, the patient’s pre-amputation history, occupational requirements, his geographical location, and a discussion of patient expectations and economical conditions help to identify the kind of components and materials to be used, an apt prescription helps the patient to achieve the optimum level of functional ability. The selection of components/parts of the prosthesis is a scientific process which should be done by the Rehab team altogether after examining the above mention factors.
